SAITAMA, JAPAN - MAR. 31: A 23-year-old man was arrested Thursday on suspicion of abducting a teenage girl in 2014 from Saitama Prefecture who escaped after two years in captivity over the weekend, police said. The arrest of Kabu Terauchi came after he was discharged from hospital in Shizuoka Prefecture where he was being treated for self-inflicted wounds after attempting suicide by slashing his throat with a box cutter. The police found Terauchi in the Shizuoka city of Ito, southwest of Tokyo, on Monday after receiving an emergency call about a man covered in blood. He was transferred to a Saitama police station Thursday. The 15-year-old girl from Asaka, Saitama Prefecture, near the capital, went missing on March 10, 2014, after she was last seen speaking with a young man in front of her home as she was returning from school. The suspected has admitted abducting the girl, and told investigators that they had not met before the abduction, according to the police. The police believe that Terauchi abducted her by car and kept her captive for about two years at his apartment in Chiba Prefecture, east of Tokyo, and later in an apartment in Tokyo's Nakano Ward. He graduated from Chiba University in March and moved to Nakano. The university has said it is considering revoking his diploma. The police quoted the girl as saying she was unable to flee because Terauchi kept her locked up. She also said there were times when the suspect took her outside, but the police believe she could not run away as he kept a close watch on her. The girl managed to escape from the apartment in Nakano while Terauchi was out and made calls to her mother and the police from a public phone at JR Higashinakano Station shortly after noon on Sunday, according to the police.
