NEW YORK, NEW YORK JUNE 22: (SPEECH) Writers Guild of America East President Michael Winship speaks as New York City Council elected officials join Writers Guild of America, East (WGAE) picketers at City Hall Park on Day 52 of the Hollywood Writers Strike on June 22, 2023 in New York City. City Council member, Carmen De La Rosa on Thursday introduced a formal resolution which city council members will vote on encouraging the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) to resume good faith negotiations with the WGA. The writers strike has delayed and disrupted television and movie productions throughout the East and West Coasts. The board of directors for the Writers Guild of America, which includes West Coast and East Coast branches, voted unanimously to call for a walkout. Negotiations between WGA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), a top guild and a trade association that represents Hollywoods top studios, failed to avert the first walkout in more than 15 years. Union members have stated that they are not being paid fairly in the streaming era and are seeking a new contract - pay increases and structural changes to the business model.
