Winchester Mystery House in California expects its visitor for Halloween

CALIFORNIA, US - OCTOBER 28: Winchester Mystery House provides Halloween special event "Lost In The House Tour", an indoor theatrical paranormal investigative adventure, in San Jose, California, US. The tour is a spookier Halloween tradition of the Bay area that is sort of a ghost investigation. The last day of October has been celebrated as Halloween, or All Hallows’ Eve for the past 12 centuries in Britain and Ireland particularly. It marks the end of the summer and the start of winter. People dress up in special costumes ranging from traditional witches and skeletons to more modern fare, like movie characters or politicians. It is particularly a fun time for children: the U.S. custom of trick-or-treating has migrated across the Atlantic in recent years. Now, British and Irish households have to be well-stocked with sweets when gangs of small children come knocking. Halloween gained popularity in the United States in the 1840s by way of massive Irish immigration to escape the Irish Potato Famine. The Pagan roots of the celebration may be what led to it being popular with farm communities and people looking to connect with the land as the seasons turned. Natural elements often showed up in costumes of this time. Halloween itself is, of course, not part of the Christian religious calendar. It was originally a religious holiday for Druids and is still celebrated as such by Wiccans. The surrounding days were also claimed as Catholic holidays centered on honoring the dead.
