Enthronement of new emperor inspires confectionary and shrine to develop ‘karuta’ playing card sandwich

Video footages shows “amo,” bean paste-coated mochi rice cakes, sandwiched between edible “kurata” playing cards in a novel take on traditional Japanese sweets developed by a local confectionary in Otsu, Shiga Prefecture. The recent ascension to the throne of Emperor Naruhito inspired the sweet shop, Kano Shojuan, to collaborate with local Omijingu shrine, well known as a venue for karuta competitions, to create the sweet treat. The edible cards are based on an original set kept at the shrine and are laser-printed wafers about 4 centimeters wide and 4 millimeters thick. The video footage was taken on Oct. 26 by The Asahi Shimbun.
