Goddess of mercy from largest hanging scroll in Japan revealed digitally as priests chant at Nara temple
Video footage taken on March 13 at Hasedera temple in Sakurai, Nara Prefecture, shows priests chanting in front of a projected image of the goddess of mercy taken from the largest “kakejuku” hanging scroll in Japan. The actual Hasedera Honzon Juichimen Kanzeon Bosatsu Miei Daigajiku scroll measures 16.5 meters by 6.2 meters and depicts the 11-faced bodhisattva Kannon, otherwise known as Avalokiteshvara. The image said to be have been drawn to the same scale as a figure of the goddess lost in a fire at temple, in order to aid its reconstruction. The image was projected on a 200-inch screen set up at the temple as well as at three other temples around the country belonging to the same Buzan sect of the Shingon school of Buddhism.
