Ibaraki sees who can devour 'natto' fermented beans fastest

Video footage taken on March 11 in Mito, Ibaraki Prefecture, shows bowlfuls of sticky "natto" fermented soybeans, the prefecture's signature specialty, being devoured by contestants in a speed-eating competition. Called off for the past three years, the event drew 170 participants who munched through a preliminary round of 90 grams of natto over 310 grams of rice (210 grams for women) leading the top 10 finishers to the final round of eating five 70-gram packs of natto (three packs for women) wrapped in straw. The winning time was 26.09 seconds for the male champion and 44.41 seconds for the female. (Shun Hayashi)
