New ‘Ama’ Diver in Iwate Prefecture Prepares for Debut on July 1

Video footage taken on June 6 shows Eri Nagano getting submersion training in a pool to become an “ama” female free diver at the Kosode Ama Center in Kuji, Iwate Prefecture. Ama divers collect sea urchin and other delicacies from the sea floor. Nagano, who works at a food processing plant in the city, is the first woman in two years to try out for the job at the ama center, where female divers show off the traditional labor to visitors. Nagano is expected to make her debut on July 1.
