Hanging Fern Decorations Being Readied to Give a Sense of Cool during Sweltering Summer Months

Video footage taken on June 3 in Takarazuka, Hyogo Prefecture, shows spherical and crescent-shaped “tsurishinobu” decorative hanging ferns being carefully readied for market at a local specialist nursery. Tsurishinobu are made by growing the ferns for about five years and then transferring them into compacted balls of soil, where they are nurtured for another year and a half. They are traditionally hung at entranceways to give a feeling of cool during the heat of summer. Well cared for, a tsurushinobu can thrive and offer enjoyment for 10 to 20 years.
