New face joins Japan’s northernmost female sea urchin divers
Video footage taken on July 7 in Kuji, Iwate Prefecture, shows Eri Nagano braving 15-degree waters during her debut professional dive to gather sea urchins. She was the first woman in two years to join Japan’s northernmost "ama" female divers who show their stuff in front of tourists along the Kosode coast. Nagano worked at a local food processing facility before deciding to take up the role at the invitation of a diver friend. She practiced at a local high school pool.
