Volunteers give final twists to giant sacred rope in Shimane

Video footage taken on July 24 in Iinan, Shimane Prefecture, shows volunteers from around the country helping put the final twists into a "shimenawa" sacred rope, one of the largest ever made in Japan. The 50 volunteers were required to entwine two rice-straw ropes together, one weighing about 1.8 tons and needing a crane to be lifted off the ground. It took about four months to complete the 3.5-meter-long shimenawa. The finished product was hung at a shrine in Kasama, Ibaraki Prefecture, on July 26. (Orina Sakakibara)
