Traditional rice-pounding ceremony held at Iwate Prefecture temple

Video footage taken On Dec. 28, 2021, shows young priests at Motsuji temple in Hiraizumi, Iwate Prefecture, pounding mochi glutinous rice to make a traditional New Year food to be offered to parishioners and the temple's deity. A 50-kilogram "shimenawa" ornament was also hung to mark the coming year at the temple where the deity is said to have powers to ward off illness and misfortune.
