Dance held at ancient Iwate Prefecture temple to commemorate defeat of indigenous tribes
Video footage taken on April 14 in Hiraizumi, Iwate Prefecture, shows a “kagura” sacred dance performance held at Takkoku-no-Iwaya Bishamondo temple, a recognized historical site. Twice destroyed by fire, the temple is said to have been originally constructed about 1,200 years ago under the orders of a Yamato general to mark the suppression of the local Emishi tribes. Pressed against a cliffside, the structure was last rebuilt in 1961.
