After last train men with shovels take to tracks to keep Otaru Station operating
Video footage taken in the very early hours of Feb. 14 shows the behind-the-scenes work involved in keeping Hokkaido Railway Co.’s Otaru Station operational despite heavy snowfall in the area. Working in minus-seven-degree temperatures, a team of 10 workers armed with shovels along with a carriage equipped with an rotary snow blower work to clear the tracks of about 76 centimeters of snow. The operation begins after the arrival of the last train at 00:38 a.m. and continues to just before the station reopens for the first departure of the day at 5:39 a.m.
