Electric 'bicycle' runs on train tracks for disaster recovery
Video footage taken in the early hours of Nov. 11 in Minokamo, Gifu Prefecture, shows workers zipping along railway tracks on an electric-powered cart designed to take track maintenance crew to a site damaged by a typhoon or earthquake. Central Japan Railway Co. has been testing the two-seater since July to study whether it can replace engine-driven models, which have been in use for more than five decades. The vehicle is called an "automatic bicycle on the track" in industry parlance because early models were pedaled by railway workers. JR officials said the electric version allows for better communication as it makes less noise. It can run 50 kilometers on a single charge and record a maximum speed of 30 kph. (Susumu Imaizumi)
