Awamori rice alcohol distillery in Okinawa given back its prewar look
Video footage taken in Nago, Okinawa Prefecture, shows the Tsukayama Shuzosho “awamori” distillery restored to its prewar appearance after a 7-year, 420-million-yen renovation project. The wooden facility, which began operating in 1928, survived U.S. attacks during World War II, and was turned into a bakery for American forces. The distillery produced 88,000 liters of the alcohol distilled from rice during a prewar peak year, compared with the current 10,000 liters. The facility, designated an important cultural property in 2009, is open to the public.
