Wandering Chestnut Tiger Butterfly of Lore Appears at Children Storyteller’s Hometown
Video footage taken in Handa, Aichi Prefecture, shows a chestnut tiger butterfly perched on a flower in a thoroughwort garden in the hometown of children’s literature author Nankichi Niimi (1913-1943). The garden, located at a museum devoted to Niimi, was planted in June as part of an effort to attract butterflies and fireflies mentioned in his tales. The migratory butterflies, which can travel a distance of more than 1,000 kilometers, were first spotted on Oct. 5 and are expected to remain a sight until early November.
