Passenger Ferry Stranded in Seto Inland Sea Overnight after Striking Buoy

Video footage shows the 9,774-ton Ferry Fukuoka II off Akashi, Hyogo Prefecture, a day after it butted against a half-submerged buoy on the evening of March 18, possibly entangling its propeller with the buoy’s chain. Officials from the Osaka-based operator Meimon Taiyo Ferry Co. arrived on the scene on the morning of March 19. The incident took place when the ferry was approached by a patrol boat called to transfer a person suddenly taken ill on the ship. The ferry was en route from Osaka to Kita-Kyushu in the Seto Inland Sea, carrying about 500 passengers and crewmembers.
