Yellow flags, with film directors message, help 2011 tsunami survivor move on
Video footage shows Keisuke Kanno raising a string of 27 yellow flags in front of his new home in Rikuzentakata, Iwate Prefecture, on the eighth anniversary of the earthquake and tsunami that claimed the lives of about 1,800 residents of the city. Kanno, 77, who lost a sister in the tsunami that destroyed his house, first raised the flags as a symbol of hope amid the ruins of his community about two months after the Great East Japan Earthquake. A former carpenter, Kanno was inspired by The Yellow Handkerchief, Yoji Yamadas acclaimed 1977 film that he once watched. He received a postcard from Yamada, who said he felt more than rewarded as a film director. One of the flags also bears a message from Yamada, which reads May hope be with you forever.
