Hikonyan Restarts Activities After Funding Fears
Video footage shows Hikonyan, in his distinctive horned helmet, greeting fans in front of Hikone Castle on April 4, two days earlier than expected. Fans feared that they might not be able to meet the popular mascot of Hikone, Shiga Prefecture, after the city assembly voted down the fiscal 2019 budget proposal and funding for his activities was left out of the interim budget approved at the end of March. The Hikone-based Japan Local Character Association stepped in to take over Hikonyan’s operations on its own expenses. About 250 fans, some leading their excited children, showed up at the event on April 4. Hikonyan was originally scheduled to remain out of action until after April 5.
