Star Gorilla in Nagoya Zoo Unfazed by New Sand-throwing Neighbors
Video footage shows an alarmed chimpanzee atop an 11-meter-tall tower hurling sand at western lowland gorilla Shabani and his family in a compound 15 meters away across a passageway for visitors at the Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Garden in Nagoya. The handsome Shabani, the star of the zoo, appears relatively unfazed by his screeching new neighbors. The video was taken in early October, a month after both primate species were relocated into a new African forest zone. A wall blocked their previous compounds from mutual view. A zookeeper says it is not uncommon for chimpanzees and gorillas to be found in the same territory in their natural habitat. (Nen Satomi)
