Video Assistant Referee System for Soccer Matches shown Off
Video footage shows a demonstration of the new video assistant referee (VAR) system that will be implemented during the upcoming FIFA World Cup competition set to start in Russia on June 14. The system meant to avoid mistaken calls is manned by a specially trained trio of a main VAR, his assistant and an operator that determines and sends footage of disputed plays to the referee on the pitch. The VAR system was used for the first time in Japan during an international friendly match between Japan and Ghana on May 30. Japan’s professional J-League is looking to incorporate the system as early as 2020.
