Ukrainian farmers in war zones fear that no export traders will risk sending trucks to get grain
KHARKIV, UKRAINE - AUGUST 3: Ukrainian farmers in the active war zones are risking their lives in order to harvest, but some have nowhere to store their grain as the warehouses were destroyed by Russian strikes.
In the hopes of curbing a world-wide food crisis, Ukraine and Russia have agreed on a grain deal in the midst of a war between the two countries.
The deal has closed. The ship has sailed. However, some Ukrainian farmers are still struggling to stay afloat - despite a plentiful harvest season.
In the village of Maksymivka in the Kharkiv region, the 67-year-old farmer Anatoly Oleksandrovych Ternov is expecting up to 5,000 tonnes of grain harvest, including wheat, peas, sunflower seeds and more from his 1,700 hectare farm.
However, these grains are going nowhere because the farm is located only 6 km away from the Russian frontline and under constant bombing and heavy shelling.
Anatoly explained no export traders will risk sending trucks to collect the grains in this active war zone. He said they could not benefit from the grain deal, and told:
"Nobody is taking out the grain and we have nowhere to take it away because we are in an active war zone. Nobody is coming here to take the grain."
Arranging his own logistics is not an option due to factors like diesel prices and inflation.
Anatoly is not alone. He is just one of many farmers across the region who have given their blood, sweat and tears working the land, but are left with an untouched and worthless harvest.
Türkiye, the UN, Russia, and Ukraine signed a historic deal on July 22 to reopen three Ukrainian ports – Odesa, Chernomorsk, and Yuzhny – for grain that has been stuck for months due the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, which is now in its sixth month.
