Two Wild Elephants Intrude Southwest China Village, Prompting Safety Warnings
NING'ER, CHINA - SEPTEMBER 05: Two wild elephants walk on the road on September 5, 2021, in Ning'er county, Pu'er city, Yunan province of China. Two stray wild elephants intruded into a countryside road in southwest China's Yunnan Province, prompting local authorities to issue safety warnings. The elephants stayed in the wild near Wenhua Village of Yunnan's Ning'er County for a long time and two of the elephants were playing in the woods near a road. Noticing that they were spotted, the two elephants ran out of the woods and chased the crowd along the highway. Thanks to the timely warning, villagers evacuated and avoided personnel injuries. The local authorities are monitoring the elephants at present and ready to issue warnings to the villagers living nearby. The wild elephants stayed on the highway for more than 10 minutes and torn down road signs with their trunks. The area the elephants hung about was only 100 meters away from a school. In order to prevent wild elephants from further approaching villages and schools, local authorities dispatched teams to constantly monitor the movement of the elephants and send a timely warning to the locals. At the same time, the teams also took various measures such as burning fire piles, placing obstacles and making noise at the intersection and main roads, which effectively prevented wild elephants from going into the village. According to some staff members, the two elephants belong to the family which went northward from Mojiang County early this year. On May 14, the family went across the Babian River and entered Ning’er County. The two elephants have stayed in the region of Mohei Town and De'an Town since May. By the end of Sept. 6, the elephants were still wandering in the wild near Wenhua Village. Both the elephants and people along their way of wandering are well and safe.
