Germany's sunken submarines of WWII seen in Türkiye's Black Sea

KOCAELI, TÜRKİYE - OCTOBER 26: Two sunken submarines, U20 and U23, belonging to the German navy can be seen lying deep in the Black Sea in northern Türkiye. Professional Turkish divers took footage of the submarines off Karasu in Sakarya and Kandira in Kocaeli. Footage shows them all covered by marine species and sea shells. The submarines sunk during WWII, when Hitler was fighting against USSR or the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. Hitler's Germany asked Türkiye to open the straits to submarine passage, however the answer was negative. Türkiye chose to stay neutral in the Second World War, and closed the Dardanelles and Istanbul Straits, which are the only means of access to the Black Sea, to military ships. In an effort to win a victory over Soviet Union, Germans made a crazy plan and transported six submarines by land and by river from the Romanian port of Constanta to the Black Sea. Those submarines sank over 20 Soviet ships in the Black Sea during the war. Later, the Soviet army entered Constanta, the only base of submarines, and destroyed three of the six submarines. The remaining three were left without a port and without support. Having no other option, German commanders ordered to sink the submarines in the Black Sea. Dozens of year later, the sunken submarines were found by the Turkish Navy's search and rescue ship TCG Kurtaran.(Footage by /Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)
