Spending 4 years offshore around Adriatic, Caretta caretta still watched with satellite tracker
MUGLA, TÜRKİYE (RECENT, AUG. 2023) - 'Tuba' the Caretta caretta that is estimated to be around 25-30 years old has moved 25,000 kilometers away from the coast in western Türkiye, where she was released into the sea with a satellite tracking device.
Contrary to the expectations of the staff that released her into the sea four years ago on famous Iztuzu beach in Dalyan district of Mugla province, the Caretta caretta has not yet begun her return journey from the Adriatic.
The staff is so astonished at the period that she spent offshore.
"After Tuba went to the Adriatic Sea, she did not move down from there. During the winter, she moved to the south of Italy but went to the Adriatic again without getting too close to the coast in the summer periods. It was so interesting that she stayed offshore for such a very long time," said Dogan Sozbilen, the Coordinator of the Sea Turtle Research, Rescue and Rehabilitation Center (DEKAMER).
"We would normally assume that sea turtles come back every 2 or 3 years, and some of them even more often, but Tuba's 4 years are over and she still hasn't started its return journey. This means that they can actually spend longer periods without nesting. That is valuable information," he told. (Footage by Durmuş Genç/Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)
