2 Dead, About 70 Others Injured in Pileup in Hiroshima Highway Tunnel
HIROSHIMA, JAPAN - MAR. 17: A truck slammed into a car and triggered a pileup Thursday inside a highway tunnel in the western Japan prefecture of Hiroshima, leaving at least two people dead and nearly 70 others injured, police and firefighters said. Five vehicles caught fire following the 12-vehicle pileup, which occurred around 7:30 a.m. on the Sanyo Expressway in Higashihiroshima, according to the police. Of the two killed in the accident, one was identified as Setsue Maruoka, 65, from the city of Takehara. The other, who was found dead inside a burned vehicle, remained unidentified. While most of the injuries were believed to be minor, at least two people were in an intensive care unit and five others were hospitalized for burns and carbon monoxide poisoning, according to a hospital treating them. Traffic was congested at the time as one of the lanes was closed due to a separate accident involving two trucks inside the tunnel, which occurred early morning, according to the police and highway officials. The pileup occurred about 200 meters into the 840-meter-long tunnel. Black smoke poured from its entrance until the fire was extinguished about two hours later. There were fire extinguishers and fire hydrants located every 50 meters inside the tunnel, but no sprinkler was installed, the highway officials said. The tunnel is located about 10 kilometers northwest of Higashihiroshima Station on the Sanyo Shinkansen line.
