Local news executive says internet gatekeepers determine news visibility while raking in others' profits
Trib Total Media President and CEO Jennifer Bertetto tells the Senate Judiciary Antitrust Subcommittee in prepared statement at hearing on big tech challenges to journalism and the news industry that access to news online has become concentrated on gatekeepers Facebook and Google which determine how news is displayed, prioritized and monetized without compensating the journalists that create the content they rely on but sadly most Americans get their news from these platforms raking in record profits by simply curating content, 65 percent of Google users do not leave their site to click through to a newspapers website, depriving publishers of the traffic and ad dollars it brings, nonsense that the newspaper industry has failed to modernize because even restructuring and enhanced digital offerings were not enough to level the playing field, small publishers stuck between a rock and a hard place with no weight in negotiations with platforms, the Journalism Competition and Preservation Act a solution to give publishers and seat at the table to negotiate fair terms.
