A Number Of Children Show Off Sum Skills At Abacus Festival In Tokyo

A total of 92 children gathered at Yushima Tenjin shrine in Tokyo’s Taito Ward to add, subtract, multiple and divide as they competed in “soroban” abacus skills during a festival held on February 5, 2017, Japan. The children, 7 years old or younger, attempted to calculate numbers read aloud on 4-meter-long abacuses each equipped with 283 rows of beads for handling numerals. After the brain-teasing display the participants paraded around the shrine grounds bobbing a “mikoshi” portable shrine made up of 120 abacuses on their shoulders. Yushima Tenjin honors scholar and poet Sugawara no Michizane, known as the god of learning.
