Bean Throwing Ceremonies Kick Off Japan's Spring Season

KYOTO, JAPAN - FEB. 2: Throw beans and bring in luck, get rid of evil - at shrines and temples traditional bean throwing ceremonies are taking place as early bird events to cerebrate the long waited end day of winter in Japan, called setsubun -- division of seasons -- February 3 this year, according to the calendar. On Monday February 2, several sites held such ceremonies as season's first runners in the country In Kyoto's Yasaka Shirine, maiko and geiko kimono-clad traditional female dancers threw beans to hundreds of well-wishers. If you can catch the bean, good luck is believed to be with them throughout the year. Meanwhile in Osaka, another bean throwing event was hosted at Tsutenkaku Tower attended by players of Osaka-based professional baseball team Hanshin Tigers and the stars of Shogi Japanese chess players.
