Threshing corn with the flail late 1800s style - stock video

The sheaves were opened and spread on a cover. The wooden flai with its two parts joined with a leather strap beat down on the heads of the sheaf to remove the grain from the straw. This was s killed task for the operator. We can see the before and after shot showing the heads still attached to the straw and below that the bunch with the heads removed by the flail. During the operating of the flail. The chaff was also gathered on the sheet. To remove the chaff which is the lighter outed husk of the grain the grain was dropped from a height. The wind would blow the lighter chaff away from the heavier grain which fell straight to the ground. This then removed the chaff from the grain. The grain ,chaff and straw all had a purpose either in feeding to the livestoch or used as bedding or some of the grain being milled into oatmeal at the local meal mill . Here we see the straw being put into the hen house for them to scrape and spread on the floor of their hen house. The other sheafs are being fed to the Clydesdale horses in their field.
