Toys thrown on to pitch by Besiktas fans donated to children in quake-hit Türkiye

ISTANBUL, TÜRKİYE - FEBRUARY 26: Thousands of toys thrown by fans of Istanbul football club Besiktas onto the field were donated to the children on Thursday, March 2, who were affected by the devastating Feb. 6 earthquakes in Türkiye.The morale of children also boosted who survived the twin earthquakes in the country's southern Hatay province.Sunday's match, Feb. 26, between Besiktas and Fraport TAV Antalyaspor at Istanbul's Vodafone Park was paused at 4 minutes 17 seconds after the kickoff in memory of the initial earthquake, which struck at 4.17 a.m. local time (0117GMT).Following the major earthquakes, the Istanbul football powerhouse launched a heartwarming campaign asking fans to bring stuffed toys to Besiktas' home ground Vodafone Park.On the scoreboard at the stadium, the license plate codes of the 11 Turkish provinces jolted by the quakes flashed.Football players of both clubs, including those in the substitute benches, volunteered to remove the toys from the pitch.The death toll from the devastating earthquakes that struck Türkiye rose to 45,089, the country’s disaster management agency, AFAD, on Wednesday, March 1.The 7.7 and 7.6- magnitude quakes struck 11 provinces – Adana, Adiyaman, Diyarbakir, Elazig, Hatay, Gaziantep, Kahramanmaras, Kilis, Malatya, Osmaniye and Sanliurfa.More than 13 million people in Türkiye have been affected.(Footage by ISTANBUL FOOTBALL CLUB BESIKTA/Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)
