Thousands commemorate murdered mayor of Gdańsk on the fifth anniversary of his death
Thousands of people are gathering in Gdansk, Poland, on January 13, 2024, to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the murder of former mayor Pawel Adamowicz. The shocking attack, which was broadcast live on television, left Poland in shock and led to accusations from opposition politicians at the time that the alleged inflammatory language of some of the country's leaders and pro-government media may have influenced the murderer. Pawel Adamowicz, one of Poland's longest-serving mayors, was attacked and stabbed on stage during the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity, one of Poland's largest annual charity events, on January 13, 2019, and died the following day.
