Jubilant fans celebrate in Casablanca after Morocco beats Portugal making World Cup history

CASABLANCA, MOROCCO - DECEMBER 10: Thousands of football fans celebrated in Casablanca on Saturday evening (Dec. 10) after Morocco beat Portugal 1-0 and became the first African nation to reach the FIFA World Cup semifinals in Qatar 2022. Morocco will take on the winner of the England vs. France quarterfinal match, on Wednesday. Morocco, who have never gone beyond the last 16 before the Qatar 2022, qualified for the quarterfinals for the first time in history after eliminating former champions Spain on penalties on Tuesday. The Atlas Lions played in the FIFA World Cup on six occasions in 1970, 1986, 1994, 1998, 2018, and 2022. Before the 2022 World Cup, Morocco did their best in 1986. The African team were eliminated in the Round of 16 by West Germany 1-0. But in Qatar, Morocco are named the dark horses of the tournament for their performance.
