The countless background objects are galaxies, many comparable in size to our own Milky Way. The NASA ESA Hubble Space Telescope was used to map dark matter (coloured in blue). NASAs Chandra X-ray Observatory data enabled astronomers to accurately map the ordinary matter (shown in pink)
