Energizing Drum Performance During Protest At Portland, Oregon
This footage was filmed and produced 22 July 2020.
Facing federal forces who came to Portland to subdue them, many of the city's protesters have taken to the streets this week with items scrounged from home. Then they have assembled at the federal courthouse each night with sometimes starkly different visions of how to put their tools to use.
In 55 consecutive nights of protest in Portland, no two have been alike. The protests began on May 29, after the killing of George Floyd in police custody in Minneapolis. They have continued ever since, night after night, and they show no signs of letting up.
"The guy playing drums on the left is Nick, guy on the right is Ben. Blonde guy dancing is my roommate and one of my best friends, Andy. I moved in with Andy when Nick & Ben moved to L.A. to try to make it big with their band, Strange Hotels. They all grew up in Minneapolis together, and the guys came up to Portland to hang for a bit. They bring the party and energy wherever they go, even a protest.
The crowd was chanting:
"Defund PPB how much? 15% at least!
Where should that money go? To our black communities!
What do we want for number three? Protester amnesty!
What do we want for number four? Kick Ted Wheeler out the door!"
(PPB is the Portland Police Bureau)", said Brandon Bates, author of the videos. (Footage by StringersHub via Getty Images)
