Huge Ancient Coral Reef Discovered Off Darwin Islands In Galapagos, Ecuador
This footage was filmed and produced 17 April 2023.
The footage shows the operation Atlantis to explore the newly discovered coral reef off the coast of Charles Darwin's Galapagos islands.
Marine scientists from Britain, America, and Ecuador discovered the previously unknown coral reef in perfect condition on an underwater mountain. The reef is believed to be thousands of years old and is said to spread over several kilometers. The scientists used a state-of-the-art submersible to explore the site up to 600 meters below the sea. The reef is in a marine reserve between Santa Fe and San Cristobal islands.
The footage also shows the deep-sea submersible research vehicle known as the Alvin being lowered off the ship during the operation
