Tim Conway Talks About 'The Carol Burnett Show'
Tim Conway: There was a lot of places to guest in variety because I guess there was 17 variety shows on at the time. Carol’s was one of them and she asked me to come on and do a show, and I did a show and she introduced me to Harvey, she took me down to the basement, he was handcuffed to a pipe down there and she said, “This is Harvey Korman.” and I said, “Swell.” We became great friends instantly and we had that terrible thing of Jack Benny and George Burns had where all Harvey had to do was look at me and he’d go south on me so that became part of the show and… Carol was such a wonderful, gentle star of a show, most stars, If something funny is going to happen they’ll say “Excuse me, I’ll be doing that and you stand over here and you feed me the line.” But Carol, she just wanted to be in the mix and she loved comedy, she loved good humor, she loved to hear an audience laugh whether she was responsible or anybody else is responsible. So it was a great 11 years. I was a writer on the show so Harvey never knew, a lot of people never knew, what I was gonna do because I would write one thing and then say something totally different just to keep it fresh as we say. But a lot of things like the old man walk, they had never seen that old man walk until we were actually taping the show and they said, “C.ome on in” and I walked to the door, ya know that very slow walk and as I was walking and I said, “If they let this go we’re gonna be here for three days.” So, but I kept walking, got tied up in the rug and forever getting to the couch to say my line, said my line, and then left again and it was forever and Joe said “No, keep it in. That’s good, that’s fine”. Carol said “No, that’s great!” So that became the old man. Tudball and Wiggins. I wrote most of those and that stemmed from being a writer on a show and the writer’s office was at one end of the hall and then way down the other end of the hall was the secretary for the writers. So if you had to have something typed, yo
