Tokyo 2020 Pulls Controversial Logo At Request Of Designer -- Text includes translated remarks

TOKYO, JAPAN - SEP. 1: The Tokyo 2020 Olympic organizing committee announced Tuesday it will no longer use the controversial logo for the Games that sparked accusations of plagiarism and nationwide scorn. In yet another public relations fiasco for organizers, who are under fire over plans for the main Olympic stadium, Tokyo 2020 CEO Toshiro Muto said the committee decided to pull the logo at the request of designer Kenjiro Sano. -- 01:11 "The decision to strike the logo was made because we feel it just does not have public support. We are not pulling the emblem because there is a pending lawsuit in Liege. We are absolutely convinced Mr. Sano's design does not resemble the one from Liege," he said. 03:07 "We are in regular contact with the IOC, especially our legal departments," Muto said. "In writing, we sought for understanding from President (Thomas) Bach, (vice president and head of the Coordination Commission for 2020 John) Coates and they have said they will continue to support our committee. 03:27 Muto said the IOC has already been notified of the decision, and is giving full support.
