Theremin: Worlds first contactless musical instrument invented by Russian physicist
ANKARA, TRK襤YE - NOV. 27, 2024: The Theremin, invented in 1919 by Russian physicist Lev Theremin and named after its creator, draws attention as one of the oldest electronic musical instruments in the world, allowing musicians to play it by using electromagnetic fields without physical contact.
A century after its invention, the Theremin family today continues to promote the musical instrument across the world.
Russian musician Peter Theremin spoke to AA about the instrument, invented by his great-grandfather, physicist Lev Theremin in then-Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) over a century ago.
"It is the instrument that launched the history of electronic music," he said.
Describing how the instrument works, the musician explained, The Theremin is played by altering the parameters of invisible electromagnetic fields. One hand adjusts the pitch, while the other controls the volume, creating an unimpeded connection between the musician and the sound.
Lev Theremins groundbreaking invention garnered attention from notable figures, including Nobel laureate Albert Einstein, who witnessed a demonstration of the Theremin in 1927. Lev Theremin toured Europe and the United States, performing in cities such as Paris, London, and New York.
During this time, the American company RCA Victor began producing the instrument, which became renowned for its distinctive sound, often featured in science fiction, horror, and thriller films.
Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin was also fascinated by the instrument and even attempted to play Mikhail Glinkas Lark on the Theremin.
