Truck drivers block roads in Argentina to protest severe diesel fuel shortage

BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA - JUNE 22-23: The shortage of diesel fuel, which at first affected only eight provinces in Argentina has affected nearly the entire country, according to the national freight transport federation Fadeeac.The fuel shortage was first noticed on May 25 and by June 5.The most affected provinces are Buenos Aires, the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires, Entre Ríos, Corrientes, Misiones, Santa Fe, Córdoba, Santiago del Estero, Tucumán, Salta, Jujuy, Formosa, San Juan and Mendoza. Meanwhile, San Luis, La Rioja, Catamarca, and Chaco.Truck drivers in the Latin American country have staged a nationwide protest for a third consecutive day over rising diesel prices and shortages as a consequence of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.Protesters say they will carry out their actions until officials address their demands for access to affordable fuel.On June 22, drivers launched the protests across the country, partially blocking some of its main highways. They denounced that gas stations are rationing the fuel and some that are illegally overcharging for it. Nowadays, this problem affects more than 21 provinces across Argentina.The carriers grouped into Transportistas Unidos de Argentina (TUDA), the National Union of Transporters and Allied Workers of the Argentine Republic (UNTRA), Autoconvocados Unidos and the Union of Workers of the Port Administration (SUTAP) are demanding a concrete solution and report surcharges up to 78%. Due to the truck drivers’ strike which takes place in the midst of peak shipping season, only 686 trucks have entered the ports of the Gran Rosario, the world’s leading agro-export hub, when this season’s average is 3,500, according to local media.
