MUGLA, TÜRKİYE - SEPTEMBER 28, 2023: The recent recession of waters from a beach in southwestern Türkiye unveiled the remains of an ancient saltworks site. Anadolu Agency Video News on Thursday (Sept. 28) videoed the saltworks in an ancient site on Iztuzu Beach in the Ortaca district of Mugla province. The Kaunos saltworks were uncovered in 2005 during the excavations in the ancient city of Kaunos, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List. The head of the excavation team, Associate Professor Ufuk Cortuk told Anadolu that “Without salt, there would be no civilization and no humanity. Salt is, of course, an important necessity of the human body and at the same time a source of income for humankind.” Cortuk pointed the unique aspect of Kaunos saltworks adding that a similar ruins to Kaunos saltworks has not yet been found. “Kaunos saltworks you see right behind us, which is an unique ruins and a similiar ruins has not yet been found from the ancient times," he said. After water recession on the beach, the archeologists, discovered the saltworks of Kaunos ancient ruins, despite being 2000-year-old, still has not lost its function until today.
