Peterborough 'will not stand for very nasty right-wing violence': British lawmaker

PETERBOROUGH, UK-AUGUST 7: The past week in the UK has been "very worrying" due to far-right riots, but "we are not going to stand for that in Peterborough," said Andrew Pakes, a Labour MP for the city. Speaking to Anadolu, Pakes emphasized that the government would not tolerate the "thuggery" shown by far-right groups. Pakes made these comments on Wednesday while walking through a Muslim-dominated area on Lincoln Road with local councilors to assure the community of full support against threats from the far right. "I'm meeting shopkeepers and residents today to reassure the community, despite internet rumors about the thugs and violence," he said. He emphasized the unity of Peterborough's diverse community, stating, "We're one community in Peterborough. The police, the Muslim community, the white community—everyone is saying we don't want hate and division. By talking to businesses and others, we show we all support peace and coexistence." Pakes condemned the recent "very nasty right-wing violence" targeting mosques, libraries, and public buildings. Echoing Prime Minister Keir Starmer, he stated that "thuggery and violence will not be accepted, and anyone guilty of violence will face the full force of the law." Local Councilor Mohammad Jamil highlighted the need for vigilance. "We have to stay alert and react if something is going to happen," Jamil said, urging community self-defense while letting police do their job. Anna Smith, councilor and deputy mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, praised the community's strength. "I'm here to show concern, talk to the community, and reassure them that everyone is doing their best during this frightening time," she stated.
