Protests mark opening of opera season at Milan's La Scala Theatre

MILAN, ITALY - DEC. 7: The opera season at the historic La Scala Theatre in Milan opened on Sunday, Dec. 7, accompanied by pro-Palestine protests taking place in Piazza della Scala square.As VIPs arrived in elegant attire for the premiere performance of Dmitri Shostakovich's Lady Macbeth, dozens of demonstrators gathered in the cordoned-off square to express support for Palestine and Gaza, waving Palestinian flags and shouting for "Free Palestine".The group also called for the release of Mohamed Barghouti and Mohamed Shahin, a Turin imam currently detained in a repatriation center awaiting deportation over alleged statements supporting the October 7 attacks.As demonstrations unfolded outside, the opera was broadcast live on large screens in the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele and several Milan neighborhoods for public viewing.Israel has killed more than 70,000 people, mostly women and children, and injured nearly 171,000 others in attacks in Gaza since October 2023.(Footage by Michele Luigi Edoardo Novaga /Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)
