Thousands continue to flee from Ethiopia’s Tigray region into eastern Sudan

KASSALA, SUDAN - DECEMBER 16: The number of Ethiopians who have sought refuge in Sudan due to fighting in their homeland has almost reached 60,000, according to an Istanbul-based humanitarian foundation. Intense clashes between the Ethiopian army and the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) have forced thousands to migrate to Sudan, Turkey’s Humanitarian Relief Foundation (IHH) said in a recent statement. As part of humanitarian efforts, IHH teams helped refugees set up tents and also provided food, health and shelter support in coordination with the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR). Approximately 25,000 people have benefited from the humanitarian assistance so far. Since the violence began in early November 2020, refugees have been arriving at remote border points that take hours to reach from the nearest towns in Sudan, the UN Refugee Agency said. Over 3,000 people have been fleeing each day from Ethiopia’s Tigray region into eastern Sudan, the agency said, adding that most of them are women and children. "Refugees are arriving in remote areas that have very little infrastructure. The majority have crossed from Ethiopia into Sudan through Hamdayet border point in Kassala State and others at Lugdi in Gedaref State. It takes at least a six-hour drive from the nearest big town, making it difficult to quickly deliver food and supplies," according to a recent statement by the UNHCR.
