Blood Moon illuminates Virginia sky during lunar eclipse
VIRGINIA, US - MAR. 14: The night sky over Virginia was illuminated by a spectacular "Blood Moon" as a total lunar eclipse unfolded across the U.S. on Friday, March 14.
NASA announced that the Moon would pass into Earth's shadow, turning a vivid shade of red during the night of March 13 or in the early hours of March 14.
NASA explained that "a lunar eclipse occurs when the Sun, Earth, and Moon align so that the Moon passes into Earth’s shadow."
The agency stated that during a total lunar eclipse, "the entire Moon falls within the darkest part of Earth’s shadow, called the umbra."
When this happens, "the Moon appears red-orange," leading to the nickname "Blood Moon" for lunar eclipses due to this striking phenomenon.
