Mexico: Artifacts of Central American civilizations in anthropology museum amazes visitors
MEXICO CITY, MEXICO - FEBRUARY 5: The National Museum of Anthropology, one of the largest collections of ancient art in the world, in the capital Mexico City of Mexico, attracts local and foreign visitors, every year.
Built in Chapultepec Forest, the largest park in the Americas, the museum takes visitors on a journey through time with thousands of historical artifacts and priceless assets.
The museum, which is famous for the discovery of Mexican and Central American civilizations, is considered the first museum in the country with its illuminating works on the pre-Hispanic origins of the continent and the advancement of science and art in the region.
The museum was built for the first time in 1875 with the request of the King of Spain, Alfonso 7th, and the building of the museum was designed by Cubas Markique.
The content of the museum was further enriched with the addition of numerous artifacts from various cultures such as the peoples of Africa, Europe, America, Asia and ancient residents on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean.
The current headquarters of the museum opened in 1964.
The Sunstone, also known as the Aztec calendar, which was discovered with extensive excavations, the statue of Xochipilli, belonging to the Aztec civilization, and the statue of Mictlantecuhtli, the god of death, describing the Teotihuacan society, draw attention as the most admired artifacts of the museum.
On the second floor of the museum, artifacts belonging to the Maya civilization are exhibited.
The underground tomb of the Maya King Pakal, which was discovered by the famous Mexican archaeologist Alberto Ruz, in 1948, is considered one of the most important of the artifacts.
