Olympian Suzuki Becomes Japan's Sport Agency Chief

TOKYO, JAPAN – OCT. 1: The Japan Sports Agency was launched Thursday October 1 to coordinate the country's sports administration ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics. Daichi Suzuki, who won the men's 100-meter backstroke at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, officially assumed the post of the agency's first commissioner. Minister of Education Hakubun Shimomura handed him a written appointment. Suzuki unveiled the nameplate of the new office and gave his first speech to the agency staff.
