TANGERANG, INDONESIA - FEB. 4: The Indonesian government officially repatriated Serge Areski Atlaoui, a French national who had been on death row in Indonesia for drug-related offenses since 2005, on Tuesday, Feb. 4.
The decision was announced during a press conference held by Indonesian authorities.
Atlaoui was convicted and sentenced to death for his involvement in operating an ecstasy and crystal methamphetamine manufacturing facility in Cikande, Tangerang, Banten in 2005.
After prolonged diplomatic negotiations, the Indonesian government transferred Atlaoui to French custody, allowing legal proceedings to continue under French law and judicial procedures.
