Healthcare workers continue to care for premature babies at Nasser Hospital in Gaza despite challenging conditions

KHAN YOUNIS, PALESTINE - DECEMBER 8, 2023: The hospitals and healthcare workers in the Gaza Strip have been grappling with challenging conditions since the beginning of the war initiated by Israel against the blockaded Gaza Strip. Attacks on Gaza and the complete embargo have made it difficult for the healthcare system to function effectively in the region. 38-year-old Yasemin Ahmed, a resident of the city of Gaza and a midwife who was working at al-Shifa Hospital, shared the challenges she personally faced with Anadolu on Friday (Dec. 8). “At Shifa Hospital in Gaza, we were providing healthcare services in the midst of what can only be described as a disaster, amidst the sounds of artillery and missile fire. The hospital housed those who had lost their loved ones, the wounded, and displaced Palestinians. With only 4 hours of electricity provided each day and a shortage of water, hygiene standards in the hospital were compromised, placing a significant burden on healthcare workers. On November 10th, we had to leave Shifa Hospital and move to the south of Gaza.” Yasemin Ahmed said. Yasemin, continuing to provide healthcare services in the neonatal unit at Nasser Hospital in the south of Gaza, mentioned that the challenging conditions from Shifa Hospital persisted here as well. She explained that they were dealing with premature babies under the same unfavorable conditions, striving to deliver healthcare services despite the difficult circumstances. Israel resumed its military offensive on the Gaza Strip on Dec. 1 after the end of a week-long humanitarian pause with the Palestinian group Hamas. At least 17,487 Palestinians have been killed and more than 46,480 others injured in relentless air and ground attacks on the enclave since Oct. 7 following a cross-border attack by Hamas. The Israeli death toll in the Hamas attack stood at 1,200, according to official figures. Writing by Berkay Gur (Footage by Abed Zagout/Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)
