German submarine from WWII to be brought to diving tourism in western Turkey

KOCAELI, TURKEY - APRIL 28: The German submarine U23, which is located at a depth of 40 meters and 2 miles off the Black Sea discovered by the Turkish Naval Forces, will contribute to diving tourism in Turkey’s western Kocaeli province. A local sports club, Denizyildizlari, plans to organize diving sessions to bring the German submarine U23 with diving enthusiasts, off the coast of Kandıra district. The sunken U23 awaits diving enthusiasts in the Black Sea like U20, which is discovered during a naval exercise by the Turkish Naval Forces in 1994, located at Sakarya's Karasu offshore. Speaking to Anadolu Agency, a diving instructor of Denizyildizlari Sports Club, Sedat Türkmen stated that the wrecked submarine is standing as it was, “there are only distortions and traces caused by the bomb that was detonated just to sink,” he said. Another diving instructor of the sports club, Alper Korkmaz noted that following the discovery of the German submarine U23 first investigations are done to bring it to tourism. “With the support of the municipality, this year we will put the U-23 sunken submarine into the service of divers,” Korkmaz said. Talking about the sports club’s plan to meet divers with the submarine, he said: “The diving zone is 3 kilometers off the coast, and we will arrive in the area by boat. After diving into the sea, we aim to complete our dive without decompression and bring our divers safely to the beach.” (Footage by Sahin Oktay/Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)
